Hello!
Aside from
doing BUSMS this past semester, I obviously kept up my role as Social Sec for
the fencing club. I don’t know what I was thinking when I signed up for that…
but fortunately it worked out pretty well…
I organized
a few more SCORE nights out with pre-drinks on campus (thanks to the freshers
offering their halls). Personally, SCORE is not one of my favourite nights, but
I have to admit going out as a massive group in themed costumes is always fun…
Choosing the theme, not so much.
Following
our Inclusivity Award plan, I had to also organize a few non-alcoholic socials
which, believe me, is harder to do than you think here in Bath. Finding an
affordable activity which doesn’t involve a club or pub is not that easy… I
ended up organizing a film night on campus. We watched the first Lord of the
Rings (cliché much?) after a poll on the group. The extended version. It
involved a whole lot more paperwork and emailing than I’d anticipated, as the
film and room have to be approved by the University, but I managed. A whopping
6 people showed up, with those most interested in watching the film stuck in
Edinburgh due to the snow and thus unable to attend, so that was fab. Nah, it
was a decent night. I do love a bit of Lord of the Rings!
The other
non-alcohol centred social was a pizza night at The Stable. It was sooooo easy
to organize because everything is done online and they offer a pretty good meal
deal on Tuesdays. Quite a lot of people came too which was super nice!
Finally, as
an End of Year social I decided to give up on the meal idea as we’d only just
had the pizza night and instead we went to try out the new bowling alley at the
Leisure Centre. It was loads of fun! I hadn’t gone bowling since I was 7 years
old and (somehow) I managed to win not only in my group but get the best
overall score? Pretty proud of that and my lucky left hand nailing all those
strikes… #beginnersluck It was a fun alternative to the usual and a couple of
us did end up at The Cork for some drinks because the weather was lovely! And
somehow (thanks James!) got lured into joining some stag do’s river dancing
improv video… Don’t even ask…
So,
overall, Fencing did really well this year. And I mean REALLY well. Not only
did we nail the Inclusivity Award, but we also doubled our membership target,
added a women’s team and a second men’s team and the teams did particularly
well in competitions, if not winning their league at least being close to the
finals (don’t ask me for results, as you know I was only involved in the social
side of things…). All of this added up to other things, meant that we were very
well rewarded at the Blues Awards. This is the annual awards ceremony to
celebrate sports at Bath. I’d never been (never had a reason to before), but it
was a lovely night at the Assembly Rooms with a pretty sweet 3 course meal,
wine and loads of speeches. AND WE ONLY JUST WENT AND WON CLUB OF THE YEAR
BABY. I was so proud of all the effort everybody put into the club this year
and the award just meant finishing it all off with a bang! And a very messy
SCORE night afterwards in suits and heels…
Finally,
Ben organized one last social before exams, the “Social to End All Socials” and
celebrate an amazing year for fencing. He was super keen but also stressed out
about making people actually go which made me laugh... Imagine if I’d been like
that, rip me. We met up in Quads for some drinks and games and quite a lot of
people came which surprised me. It was a great evening spent chatting to
everybody and (for once) not having to make decisions about the social and
letting Sam do it (he has to learn for next year!). Ben and James surprised
finalists with some tees signed by the members which I thought was so, so
sweet! Now I have a little memento from the club this year <3 Honestly, I
was pleasantly surprised by everybody.
I know I
keep complaining about going for Social Sec and I must admit that, as a final
year, it was an added stress at times (especially with such a disorganized
bunch of people as the fencers). It did have its perks such as choosing when
and what to do, and being in the loop of what was going on with the club (since
I didn’t actually train at all lol). But on the whole I really enjoyed it, not
only for the CV skills but for meeting so many new and interesting people,
having such a supporting committee and simply having an excuse to have fun and
socialize which, in final year, was key to my sanity. So thanks y’all <3
Now,
fencing aside. I will include a little list of other things I did this semester
which I don’t really know where to fit, so here they are.
On
Valentine’s Day there was an Applicant Day for MLES programmes and I worked as
a Casual Ambassador. I wish I’d had the time to do further Open/Applicant Days
this year as I really do love the job, but unfortunately I had other things
going on so I was only able to do this one. I genuinely enjoy speaking to
prospective students and their families and sharing my love for languages, so
this is the perfect job ngl. Plus, I was paid for nearly 3 hours when in
reality I only really worked for half…during the French language talk. I can’t
complain though, we got free food too!
Towards the
end of the semester we had a few balls, the event kind. First, we had the PoLIS
Final Year Ball at the Roman Baths. It was a super nice event. A couple of us
met beforehand at Revs for some drinks before heading to the Baths. They had
drinks and nibbles and it was just a nice excuse to dress up, take nice photos
and chat with lecturers and other final years. I was also caught off guard by
good news about my masters application which meant all of my plans were turned
upside down as I’d already assumed I wasn’t getting in! We took some nice
photos with Enrico and it was strange to think all of us are done with our four
years as undergrads and going on to do all sorts of different things! It will
definitely be interesting to do a reunion in a couple years’ time and see what
everybody has done!
Finally, I
went to potentially my last Summer Ball. I went to Summer Ball in first year
because it was kind of unavoidable living on campus, but it is definitely a
final year event: one last chance to party hard with everyone finishing at Bath
before we all go off on our different ways. I spent the evening jumping from
one group to the other to be fair. It was such a lovely hot day (a bit too hot
in my opinion, but I’m the one with my ever-present fan!). I met up with Megan
and Connie to walk up to the Crescent for some pre-drinks, where half the
University had already met up, and spent
an hour or so chatting to different people and taking loads of photos. People
from fencing, from my course, from BUSMS… Even from volleyball or German class.
Everybody looked super smart in their dresses, heels and suits, red jumpsuits
being one of the most popular outfits this year. We were then picked up by
Mike, Meg’s dad, and taken to uni given that no taxis were available for hours
(at least not to take people from the Crescent to campus) and buses were
absolutely packed. Once inside I swung from one group to another and from one
stage to the other but somehow did manage to make the BUSMS annual picture by
the lake and materialize a fencing photo by the lake too (man, that was hard!).
I enjoyed watching Aquapella perform and spent most of my evening between the
Bubble and main Arena just chatting to different people and having a nice eve. I
somehow also managed to lose half the people I was hanging out with but made it
safe and sound back home on the bus. Overpriced event but worth it to see
everybody one last chance, including people from Brendon! #throwback
That is
pretty much all I got up to during last semester. I have one more catch-up post
coming at you about graduation and the two months in England (and around
Europe) before going back home, but I hope you’ve enjoyed these past few posts!
